Students are to gather information from secondary sources to demonstrate the star groups that emerge when many stars are plotted on a Hertzsprung-Russell diagrem.


Can someone help here...It's due on Monday and I cant find *any* information on this specific question.

that's the closest one i've found.
is this the one you're after?
(star groups? meaning open/galactic and globular clusters, as well as nearby/bright stars?)

or are we talking about proto galaxies, protostars, pre-main sequence, main sequence, red giants, white dwarfs, supernovae, neutron stars/pulsars and black holes?

that kind of star group?
if that's the case, then it would be the second dot point, third column, focus area 6 (astrophysics)

the sheet we got doesnt say anything about a dot point, just that question and i just re-read it and we need to do a 4 minute presentation. damn.

well i'm going to go on my assumption that it's based around the stages in a star's life/evolution and the H-R diagram.

if you have excel, you can rip off that ... if you dont, then i'll type it up for you if you want.

page 195, right hand column
'key stages in a star's life'
i think you can crap on for hrs and hrs here.

from pg 195 through to pg 202

be sure to cover everything though in your 4 min speech, so have a few overheads (if you're allowed to use them) with summary points.

here are a few headings, taken from excel.
* key stages in a star's life

* the birth of a star
-- protostars
-- pre-main sequence

* main sequence stars
-- how long will a star stay on the main sequence

* post main sequence stars
-- red giants

* red giants and helium burning
* stellar death
* white dwarfs
- planetary nebulae

* supernovae
* neutron star/pulsars
* black holes

i think this dot point just wants to know what the different classes/groups of stars are seen on the H-R diagram,
as well as being able to track the evolutionary stages in a star's birth, life, etc and linking it to life on the main sequence, and so on.

(you could go on for more than 4 mins.. but try to cut down the junk and say what's necessary)

i dont have a scanner and i dont have a fax machine.
so i couldnt scan the textbook for you, (and hence i couldnt fax it to you).

i didn't bother to capitalise some of the words/terms but word picked up most of them, auto-puntualising for me
