I talked about the treatment of drinking water, then discussed the problem with it with an example of the 1998 Sydney Giardia and Crytosporidium scare

I broke the methods down into 2 parts:

1. Purification

• Screening - removes large objects
• Flocculation - fine suspended solids are attracted to the flocculants which are coagulated into larger particles which can be filtered out.
• Filtration - sand and gravel filters catch out most of the remaining solids.

2. Sanitation

• Chlorine is added to kill bacteria and to keep the water disinfected.
• Fluorine is added to raise fluoride levels to 1ppm and strengthens tooth enamel in children as well as protects their teeth from tooth decay.

The assessment refers to the effectiveness of these methods, generally they have been fairly effective, although there are more effective alternatives like microscopic membrane filters (more expensive).

Well according to the syllabus, there is no mention of desalinisation or treating sewage.

The "methods" referred to in the dotpoint are basically the 2 things I had above.

I think you can talk about normal gravel and sand filtration or membrane filters

Yes, but the process consists of many smaller methods that are used to effectively sanitise/filter the water. (see dotpoints in my first post)

Ozone is another method that can be used, sometimes used after membrane filtration, but this is a costly method.
