No. They go through the same hiring process as everyone else but:
1) It's a great way to get industry contacts
2) It puts you ahead of other graduates who haven't participated in said placements
3) Very useful on the resume
If you perform very well, there's a chance that the firm will offer a full-time position. If I recall correctly, someone who completed a B. Resource Economics last year was an intern at Wood Mackenzie for something like 2 weeks and they were very impressed so they offered her a job.
If you take work placements seriously, it's a great boost to your chances.
