USyd's Double Degree Medicine program offers two study options, one of which was listed above, being the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine and the other being the Bachelor of Arts/Doctor of Medicine. As was mentioned, the Double Degree Medicine program comprises a three-year undergraduate degree in either arts or science followed by the four-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine. While the complete duration of the program is 7 years, the Doctor of Medicine component has a 4 year duration, compared to a 5-year Doctor of Medicine program in the case of WSU.
It becomes clear that universities offering medicine structure their programs (including length and content) differently. Another example would be UNSW, which, similar to USyd, offers the Doctor of Medicine as part of a program entailing other degrees, as follows:
- Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine - This is a 6-year program. Successful completion of this program will result in the student being awarded two degrees.
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine - This is an 8-year program that includes both components of the 6-year program with the addition of the Bachelor of Arts, hence extending this program to 8 years. Successful completion of this program will therefore result in the student being awarded three degrees.
I hope this helps!
