scaling and aligning determine your hsc mark/100 for the subject
band6 = 90-100 hsc mark

Band 6 refers purely to HSC Mark after internal moderation and aligning.

To determine what receives a band 6, standard are made - sometimes called benchmarks. Say, the committee may set 75% raw mark as a band 6 (90), anything below that does not receive band 6 (89 or lower).

Scaling is done by UAC to determine your ATAR, it's not the same as aligning, nor is it in the same process as aligning.

Bands are determined after aligning. BOS determines the mark or result which is borderline Band 5 and 6, and sets that as 90, likewise with 80, 70 etc.

Also, bands are allocated to final HSC marks, not just the exam marks. So even if you got 90 in the exam, but your moderated exam mark was 88, your final HSC mark would be 89, so you would get a band 5.
