Double Majors in Commerce? (1 Viewer)

If I was to gain entry into UNSW commerce and wanted to do a double major in accounting and finance how many years would it be?

If anyone has had experience of currently is doing a combined degree of some sort could u pls shed sum light on whether its better to just do the single major as it covers it more in depth? etc etc..

I think it's three, four with honours. All the pure comm people I know are majoring in accounting and finance.

Just a side note, more than 80% of UNSW commerce/economics graduates graduate with a double major, because it does give u flexibility. Yes accounting and finance is by far and away the most populous major choice here - I guess most ppl do accounting more for professional recognition (CPA, CA etc)

I think it usually means less electives, not necessarily extra hours...

no its same hours as most people doing commerce all have to do the same core subjects in first year anyway.. it'l likely be about 13hr/week in first year

you share classes for courses that are common to both, like microeconomics and QMA

on a side note: accounting? if only you could come and experience its extreme boredom first hand before u made any decisions

Yeah as Laz said, its all the same hours - if u do a single major, u have more free subjects to choose, but if u do a double major, u'll only have very little subjects to choose from that are outside ur double major (and at UNSW, u have to do a couple of "General Education Courses)

Eco, like aspect said, is exactly the same as Commerce in 1st yr. Basically the only difference between a B.Economics and a B.Commerce is that one of your major's has to be either Economics, Economic History, Econometrics(!) or Financial Economics. With a B.Commerce, u can choose any two majors (assuming ur going to double major)

So all in all.. is it actually worth it to do a double major? (is it harder also? )

+ if I happen to not make it in Comm and ended up in Eco how hard would it be to transfer? What kinda marks roughly would I need to move into Comm?

Yes its worth it to do a double major - because it keeps your options open, plus it gives u greater flexibility wen it comes to employment.

It is not harder than doing a single major, because regardless of whether u do a single or double major, still have to do the same amount of subjects over ur 3 yrs, so doing a single major means doing a lot more random subjects to fill up your credit points - which may be either harder or easier than doing subjects for required for a 2nd major.

Well, provided u miss the cutoff only slightly, it shouldnt be too hard, provided u keep a borderline credit/distinction average (which is harder than it sounds). You should ask Lazarus for exact figures of wat u'd need, because I dont have the Non-recent school leavers cutoffs myself

i heard that although NRSL cut offs may be taken into account, transferring between B Economics and B Commerce is hardly possible?

Actuarial Studies is where it all happens.

Oh well, we do the Accounting and Economics anyway in first year.

Well, its very possible if ur UAI is close to the UAI cutoff for Commerce...because ur uni GPA (grade point average) is averaged with ur UAI, so if u do reasonably well, say credits and distinctions in ur 1st, and ur UAI was say 1 or 2 away, then u should make it easily.

Doing a double major is worth it if you know what you want to do, e.g. if you're interested in accounting and finance, then do a double major in those.

If you're interested in one thing, e.g. Accounting, and then decide that you don't really want to spend a lot of time on anything else, but subjects from here and there look interesting, then do a single major in accounting and minor in something else.

There is no difference in difficulty simply because you're doing a double major instead of a single - the difficulty depends on the subjects you decide to do.

In terms of subjects, there are basically two electives that you have to pick from within your second major's subject area (e.g. Economics, Finance, etc.) instead of from any school in the faculty if you do a double major.

About the only REAL difference is that at the end, the degree you get will say "double major in x and y" as opposed to "major in x and minor in y"

major u pick from the school of commerce only or whatever school u do, and minor u can pick from many other places

u spend less units in minors compared to majors

and also u aren't qualified to specialise in your minor...(ie u cant be a professional accountant with only an accounting minor)
