So here is the situation;
I am on 12 units
I did math advanced last year, and somehow nicked a b5
Wondering if I should drop chemistry or lessen the focus or whatever (though, if I am lessening the focus then why do it at all?), trials are in 3 weeks; not feeling good at all.
Here are the ranks:
Advanced English: 12/85
English Ext 1: 1/15 (expect this to drop a bit tho)
English Ext 2: 8/12 ( but completed major work so why would I drop)
Modern: 4/50
Legal: 4/50
Chemistry: 16/32

Definitely depends on if you're confident in your other subjects. Personally I was pretty confident in all my subjects (except English but you can't replace that useless subject for some reason) so I just dropped chemistry in year 11 for a 'bludge' subject then dropped that in year 12. It seems like chemistry is far below in ranks compared to your other subjects so it probably won't count, but maybe try do some "sensitivity" ATAR calcs (e.g. test if it'll count if you get below expectation in another subject and above expectation in chemistry).

In summary only you can decide based on your confidence/time management/pros and cons of the tradeoff.
