Re: best govt2XXX course?

I really loved GOVT 2445 (American Politics and Foreign Policy) but that and SE Asian politics are the only two I've done.

I'd like to do GOVT 2225 except that I find Gil as interesting as watching grass grow.

The answer....

None...

Government sucks....too many right wing fascists

The GOVT's I have done are, Aust Pol, Int Buis & Pol, World Pol, Aust Foreign and Defence Policy, Reform, Revolution and post-communism, International Organisations, and Government 2 Honours (Poltiical Analysis). The best amongst the bad bunch I've done, would probably be reform, revolution post-communism.

I have heard good things about Aust Politics and Human Rights & South East Asia: Dillema's of Development.

This year I'm doing just ECOP.

Re: best govt2XXX course?

Hmmm...

Ok so my timetable sucks like a whore, so I'm thinking of changing GOVT2111 (Aust. Pol & Human Rights, despite melbournians recommendation) to something else.

The Shortlist:

GOVT 2114 - Australian Political Party System (Lectures on Tuesdsay and Wednesday - one tutorial each on Tuesdsay and Wednesday)

GOVT 2225 - International Security in the 21st Century (Lectures on Wednesday - Tutorials all day Tues, Wed and Thurs) but as aforementioned, i don't like Gil Merom as a lecturer AT ALL.

GOVT 2557 - Public Sector Management (Lecture on Monday (gah!) and tutes available Tues --> Thurs)

GOVT 2772 - Israel, Palestinians and the Arab States
(Lecture on Monday (gah!) Tuesday and Wednesday tutes)

Unless you think that Aust Pol & HR is really worth keeping, I need help in picking from one of those guys.

Jon, if we both pick 2225 we can struggle along together.

*sigh* I don't know what to do!! :(

I've heard bad things about 2226.

I just don't like Gil. He bores me to tears, I don't like his lecturing style and I find him (from an aural perspective) difficult to understand.

But I suppose we can give him another go.

I generally give up on lectures after a week or two. So as long as the content is interesting im not really all that fussed.

Even those bloody weekly tutorial papers? And the looming fear and dread associated with the exam (or is that just me?). But yes, the content was interesting and obviously highly relevant to a government major...

my comments on other govts that havent been mentioned:

Ethics and Pol: very wishy washy, but lots of practical examples, and some decent theory... is very "talk about your feelings"... but the tutorials were some of the most interesting i've had at uni, as they often got very heated, due to the controversial nature of some of the issues...

Policy Analysis: the theory wasn't particularly astounding, but the assessments were very easy, and there was no final exam... and some of the theory has come in handy for other government subjects (i seem to mention Gaventa's model of power in just about every essay i do, these days).

Human Rights and/or Gender and Human Rights: a very intelligent lecturer, but be prepared to write to a strong left wing agenda. Also, the latter course is pretty much a manbashing course, and many Gender Studies students ventured into a government course because of it.

Re: best govt2XXX course?

Hm... being left-wing for Human Rights won't be an issue for me (if I keep the subject) but my feelings on feminism are well known, so no Gender for me - I'll get beaten up by the femi-nazis. eek!!

From what I understand Gender and Human Rights is based on a liberal feminist framework. Hardly left-wing. Geez if you think that is left wing, you should be reading some of the essays i'm producing.

I heard last year Australian Politics and HUman Rights was good, but I don't think it will ever be as amazing as Tim Anderson's ECOP Human Rights course.

Read some feminist work, its actually very intresting.

I did one essay on Marxist-Feminist methodology and epistemology this semester and another on Eco-Feminism. Both were incredibly intresting. I don't agree with everything (actually most of it), but I believe that they raise some important points and make a useful contribution to academic discourse in a variety of disciplines.

Not every feminist is a Germaine Greer.

just googled tim anderson

Tim Anderson, a member of the Ananda Marga sect, was jailed for the 13 February 1978 bombing of the Sydney Hilton hotel in an episode known as the Hilton Bombing. He was released in 1985 and pardoned.

Tim Anderson currently lectures in the Faculty of Political Economy at the University of Sydney.

Re: best govt2XXX course?

Is there any point in doing both ECOP Honours 2 and GOVT Honours 2?
Oh, and has anyone done

GOVT2228 Environmental Politics; or
GOVT2221 Politics of International Economic Rels; or
GOVT2210 International Risk Analysis

Edit: I'd be doing ECOP first and foremost

I did this - I thought it was shit. You never have the same lecturer in any one week, althought we did have Bob Howard twice at the beginning and twice at the end but in general it changes from week to week.

The photo assessment is the lamest thing I have ever done - you have to take a group photo depicting what you've learnt and you discuss it online.

  • GOVT2119 Southeast Asia: Dilemmas of Development

I stand by what I wrote in the Subject Reviews thread:

GOVT 2119 – South East Asian Politics
    Ease: 8/10
    Lecturer: 8/10
    Interest: 8/10
    Overall: 8/10

If you like facts and figures and you’re interested in South East Asia developmental issues then this is a really good course.

If you don’t mind a little raised voices either, then Dr. Lily Rahimis a pretty good lecturer as well. This is her area of expertise and she is good (she is the supervisor for the Honours students specialising in SE Asian Politics) with a comprehensive knowledge of the region, in particular, Singapore & Malaysia. She also has extensive knowledge about Islam and about the rise of militant Islam in South-East Asia in recent years.

The reason I say that a liking of facts and figures is needed is because the nature of the course, dealing with one country/topic per week, means that we speed along, cramming tonnes of information into a small pocket of time, without really analysing. It seems that a lot of facts are given without much analysis – although, as senior students, this is really our job I suppose.

Assessment was good. Tutorials are HEAVILY weighted in this UoS, with 25% on your presentation and paper alone. Assessment was all good, nothing nasty or scary and was heavily tied to the lecture material. Again, showing up to lectures and doing some readings is good enough to get you there.
  • GOVT2210 International Risk Analysis

I'm doing this next year!! But so far we've done so many together and never met :(
  • GOVT2221 Politics of International Economic Rels

  • GOVT2225 International Security in 21st Century

  • [GOVT2226 International Organisations

  • GOVT2228 Environmental Politics

    [*]GOVT2440 Globalisation and National Governance

[*]GOVT2445 American Politics and Foreign Policy

Again I stand by what I said:

GOVT 2445 – American Politics and Foreign Policy
    Ease: 8/10
    Lecturer: 9/10
    Interest: 9/10
    Overall: 9/10

By far the most useful unit of study I’ve undertaken at my time at University so far. Conducted by Dennis Phillips (no link!! Sorry!!), a lecturer from Macquarie University visiting USyd, he is a former Texan who has been living in Australia since the 1970’s. More importantly though, as Dennis is actually American, his perspective is that which is perhaps more accurate and more whole than say, the opinion of an Australian who had gone to study American politics.

He is also not without bias, but Dennis freely acknowledges them and indeed, gives his background to explain why this may be the case. For example, whilst being against the Bush Administration and critical of the administrations foreign policy directives, he can also state that he understands the staunch, Southern Republican voter because his parents are of that stock.

The course is basically set in two parts: domestic American Politics and American Foreign Policy. The latter section is not as good, only because time constraints meant that we weren’t able to study it in as much depth as required for such a vast topic. The topic is also, very contentious and ever-increasing so a comprehensive coverage was always going to be difficult.

The first section though is really really good. It explains a lot about America, the psyche of Americans and how and why their political system works. By studying the foundations of American politics, we can learn a lot about the current situation, the current Administration and, to a lesser degree the effect that is has on the world.

Lectures were excellent (although again, the lectures for the Foreign Policy component were virtually word for word the same as the text), tutes were great and the readings were useful. Assessment wasn’t exactly easy but it was good it didn’t really tie in with what we were learning but it built upon it well.

I would thoroughly recommend this course to ALL government students
One thing I didn't mention though - there are weekly tutorial papers which can be tedious if you don't like that kind of thing. But they were easy.

    [*]GOVT2552 Policy Analysis

    [*]GOVT2557 Public Sector Management

    [*]GOVT2558 Government, Business and Society

    [*]GOVT2665 Ethics and Politics

    [*]GOVT2801 Applied International Studies

    [*]GOVT2802 International Studies Practicum

cimbom was right, you need to be doing B. International Studies to do the last two Units of Study.

This is because I dont like tutorial presentations or mid-semester exams or weekly assessment. These seem ok. This will probably change when timetables come out though.
