hey guys,

i was just wondering, the new core unit ECOF1010 Business and Economic Statistics A-Advanced , is that interchangeable with ECMT 1010, the non advanced version?
in the handbook they're listed as 'prohibitions' of each other, i assume that means if you do one you're not supposed to do the other? And also anyone been given 'approval' for doing this unit?

I went and asked the usyd 'academic staff' during enrolment and I got 2 responses. 1 guy sed ECOF1010 is only for if you want to pursue an econometrics major and you will do it in your 2nd year, "only if you're good enough". But since it begins with a 1, i assume that its a first year course...so wtf?

another person, who actually had a name tag and seemed to be of a higher position, told me that ECMT1010 is listed as compulsory and hence you have to do it. Didnt even bother explaining what ECOF1010 is for and why its listed as a 'prohibition" of ECMT1010.

Econometrics Major - Faculty of Economics and Business - The University of Sydney heres where u may find ECOF1010. note how it ses "ECMT1010 OR ECOF1010". I'm guessing since it's a new unit they havent bothered to add the "or ECOF1010" under the requirements for all the other commerce majors which require ECMT1010 (finance , economics etc)

thnx for the help guys please feel free to correct me at any time.

Can't really speak from experience here, but as they are prohibitions I would imagine that they are interchangeable - seems the point of having the advanced stream tbh. This is the way the normal/advanced stream works for usyd maths.

Entry to ECOF1010 is strictly by invitation only.

As of writing, there is nothing on the relevant web pages or in the faculty handbook that specifies the requirements that one has to meet before receiving such an invitation.

There is a message on blackboard, and a link to a diagnostic test that they said you should take if interested.
I got 26/30 in 51 minutes, and ATAR 99.20.
The diagnostic doesnt count to course grade.

Thoughts?

Yes. I'm probably not gonna be able to do it haha. But otherwise it sounds like you'd do well in it. I mean 86 2/3 % is an HD. Sounds like you're qualified to me :p

You may as well go for it! :)
If you don't like it, you always have a few weeks to change to ECMT1010 and I doubt you'll be behind.

ECMT1010 is the compulsory one. ECMT1020 is the optional one. And yea you can't do economics, econometrics or decision sciences (seems like econometrics) without it.

I'm confused now...
So since I'm doing ECOF1010 instead of ECMT1010 does this mean I'm limited to the majors I can choose? I wanted to do finance... will I not be able to do it now?

No. It's pretty much the same just souped up a bit as far as I can tell. Doing ECOF means you're even better prepared!

right well i replaced ECMT1010 with MATH1015 (biostatistics) so it looks like i wont be able to major in accounting, finance, economics, or econometrics! o wat a shame... lol

im majoring in HR and marketing anyway so its not a problem ;)

How did you replace it when ecmt1010 is compulsory? don't you have to do as many with a double degree or something?

well when i went to enroll, the advisor said i could replace ecmt1010 with another statistics unit (ie. MATH1015) but that i wouldnt be able to major in econ or finance. so i did that. and nobody has said anything to me about it :S hopefully the advisor was right

this is from the website

Please Note: Students who complete MATH 1005/MATH 1015/MATH 1905 and an additional junior MATH unit (im doing 3 other math units, compulsory for science) are not required to complete Business and Economic Statistics A (ECMT1010) but must replace this unit with another junior unit of their choice from the Faculty of Economics and Business (i replaced it with WORK1003). However, students who intend to undertake a major in Econometrics should study ECMT1010 and choose alternative MATH unit options to meet the requirements of the Science component of their degree.

its too confusing. i hope thats right >_<
