Did your teacher how long the speech had to go for? because they're allowed to cut you off if you go over time...

if the speech was a maximum of five minutes and you kept going til, say, 7 minutes, cutting you off seems reasonable. The assessment should give reccomendations (as you said, it did) and then a leeway of about 1 minute max should be enough. It depends on the teacher. SOME will let you keep going but ignore everything you say after the one minute leeway(i.e not marking it at all), but others might not be so generous, cutting you off abruptly and demanding you sit down. The recommendation is there for a reason and if you were pushing your luck, then cutting you off is reaosnable. AT least I think so :p

i think they can cut you off, but they should tell you beforehand so you are aware. but it is commen sense to sticki within the time limit ( saying that .. i never do!)

I think it depends how much over you go as well, like 30 seconds over should be all good, but like 3 mins over is obviously too much.

yeah, a warning system would be OK, but personally, I think you should be prepared enough to fit in the time limit and not have to have warnings. If you are going extremely overtime, then your preparation was too haphazard. 30 seconds over is fine...things change on the day and you might be nervous and speak so slower or whatever, but if youb are WAY overtime, then tough luck...
