1) explain how metal ions can be displaced by other metals.
2) Use the table of standard reduction potentials to write the net redox reaction for any spontaneous reaction that may occur in each of the following:
Zn and AU
Cl2 and Cu
Pb and Al
Ca and Br2
Mg and CU
KCL and NaF

any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The ability of metal to lose electrons is measured on the electrochemical series (as shown below). This series is useful because we can then predict which metals will react with the ions of other metals. In displacement reactions, a more reactive metal will displace the ions of a less reactive metal from solution.

Displacement reactions can be explained in terms of electron transfer reactions. Metals oxidise, or lose electrons, in displacement reactions and become metal ions. The original metal ions reduce, or gain electrons, in displace reactions and become metal atoms.

Whereby the higher the metal the more reactive it is.

Oh and with question two, is the first one the metal, and the second one the solution or the other way round?
