what's the electronic structure for the following:

(a) a monovalent anion that is isoelectronic with the helium atom
(b) a trivalent cation that is is isoelectronic with the neon atom
(c) a divalent anion that is isoelectronic with the neon atom

Isoelectronic means containing the same amount of electrons and also having same electronic configuration.

...valent an/cat-ion refers to the charge on them

a) H^- has 1s^2
b) Al^3+ has 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6
c) O^2- has 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6

Practically all you have to do for this is write down the same electronic configuration the atom has, but if they were to ask you identify the ion, then what you do is look at the charge they tell you so for example in b trivalent cation so has to be in group 3 and the atom of that cation should normally have 3 more electrons than the atom.
