Hi guys if you're reading this PLS help me out!!!!
I currently have 13 units for Y12 (4u math, 3u eng, mod his, chem, geo)
And I'm thinking about dropping either 3u eng or Geography but I can't choose... both have their pros and cons

Drop Eng Ext, Keep GeoDrop Geo, Keep Eng ext
- Geo is a more bludge subject, less work = less stress
- I've heard from some ppl that doing 4u math and 3u eng is living hell...note that I get average marks so not sure if it's a good idea
- If I drop Eng ext, I get only 4 extra frees, but not very worried abt this point
- very bad at essay writing, getting low Bs so dropping it will give me more time to spend for adv eng instead
- teacher gives bad vibes and everytime i go to her class I'm in a bad mood coz she goes on and on about her personal life for the whole lesson
- If I drop Geo, I get 7 extra frees, which are good for study😛
- literally 4 ppl in the geo class so it might scale VERY bad compared to eng ext ???
- Geo is kinda useless, eng ext can help improve my writing skills but geo is just. geo...sounds lame
- don't want another humanities subject?

to sum up, eng ext is H A R D , STRESSful, boring and scales ok
geo is not as hard, BORING and scales bad
pls reply and give me some advice, anything helps !

drop geo and keep ext eng

easier to get better in ext than adv (from what i've heard) so it could end up contributing to ur 2 units of english to atar + geo teacher sounds stupid

Scaling should not be the main thing to consider when deciding which subject to keep and which subject to drop. Keep in mind that the higher the marks you achieve, the less significant the effect of scaling will become. The more important factors are your potential in terms of academic performance in each subject, in addition to enjoyment/personal interest (or lack thereof) in each subject.

It's good that you were able to thoroughly analyse your position in both Geography and English Extension 1. From the information you provided, it seems that you may be able to perform favourably in Geography as opposed to English Extension 1, which you consider a difficult subject. The main factor that would make me lean towards suggesting to keep Geography and drop English Extension 1 is the fact that you find English Extension 1 a stressful subject. It is important to minimise stress, particularly throughout year 12. This is because not only can stress negatively impact your performance in English Extension 1, but this may have repercussions on the rest of your subjects, meaning this is something you definitely want to avoid.

Additionally, you mentioned that both subjects are boring. Because of that, the focus will be on "difficult" and "stressful" in the case of English Extension 1 and "not difficult" in the case of Geography. I therefore believe that keeping Geography would be a more appropriate option as it seems evident that the positive aspects of Geography outweigh the positive aspects of English Extension 1.

I hope this helps! 😄

Hiii this is a very late reply but I got my report last week and it said i ranked 8/9 for geography........ i got the same mark for eng ext but ranked higher, so I am thinking of dropping geography. Does ranking affect your atar? I heard that in a class with only a few people, if you rank low, you would get a low band

Yes, ranking is important with respect to your Assessment Mark. The Assessment Mark is the mark you receive that reflects your overall performance in your school-based assessment/tasks exams, it contributes 50% of your HSC mark (final mark) in a subject. One of the factors upon which it depends is your rank relative to your cohort. This means that ranking as high as possible will maximise your chances of receiving a favourable Assessment Mark.

Regarding the exact Assessment Mark you can receive, this depends on whether your cohort is academically capable. For instance, in a cohort with low academic standards, you will most likely need to rank as high as possible to maximise your chances of achieving a good Assessment Mark. However, in an academically capable cohort, the same outcome may not require you to rank as high as possible, because the academic standards of such a cohort are high. Based on this, it would be good if you could provide the number of band 6's/E4's achieved by your school in both Geography and English Extension 1.
