You may be do another subject inplace of your core one provided that it is an acceptable alternative. In many cases, it's usually a higher version of the course but there are some exceptions
for example, in mechatronic engineering (as of 24/05/2018) MMAN2700 is an acceptable alternative for COMP2121 and MMAN3400 is an alternative for MANF4611.
How did I find this out? Go to your school office and ask for a print out of your honours WAM. You can see what subjects you can do as an alternative to the ones listed as cores.
