In Jane Austen's Emma,

What is the cause of the divison in the social structre of society?

It is clearly a split between the wealthy and the poor.

A few friends and i have discussed the reasons, we all agree on the industrial revolution as one of the reasons.

I don't know too much about 19th Century England, so any insight into this would be greatly appreciated! :)

I thought clear distinctions between the males and females was clearly expressed and was the main theme in almost all of Austen's novels. ...

As for the split between socioeconomic statuses i think their caused by:

- industrial revolution
- slave trade abolition in 1807
- England's war against america's stance for independence
