My school always makes us prepare for an essay outside of school. But we have to reproduce the essay in class without reference to anything.

Does anyone's school allow to do them out of school then hand it in?

What does your school do?

The idea of a pre-prepared essay is to allow your argument/ideas to be planned out and structured so that you do freak out in an exam and write waffle. It also can help you provide an executive summary of your notes.
My school was against pre-prepared answers. The thing is with these is that once you prepare an answer, you are only driven to reproduce it without answering the question.
Maybe your school is also practising for you to be spontaneous; which is what you're meant to be doing :p

well, ive finished now, but our school never let us prepare our essays out of class. we never got the answer beforehand in english - the chance to prepare and learn an answer takes away the chance to properly discriminate between students. instead of judging them on their english skills, you end up judging them on how well they can memorise the essays put together for them by their tutor...
