explain ferrous and non ferrous (1 Viewer)

i know that ferrous contains iron and non-ferrous doesn't but why is it better to have it or why not? are there diff. properties when it does......
also i dont get the concept of the whole austenite, martensite etc...

Iron tends to rust quicker than other metals so it has a disadvantage there. It can be magnetised so you can use it in electromagnets so there's an advantage. That's the main ones I can think of now. If I find any more I'll post them up...

its important when you are using the material, ie you cant uses non ferrous material in a friction saw because youll basicalyl blow the saw up
