When we differentiate binomials in the HSC exam, can we just differentiate the sum of all the terms in one step instead of expanding than differentiating then putting back in sum form? thanks

That should be ok (check with your teachers to be sure), as long as you remember to increase the lower limit in the summation by 1.

e.g.


Likewise, if you integrate the sum, you need to change the limits accordingly.
