Could someone please explain clearly where the energy is transformed from in both cases, just a bit foggy on the concepts as they both release energy from essentially opposite reactions.

Fusion - like the reaction on the sun:

Think of this as smaller type atoms / isotopes with small atomic number (< mass number 56 iron) fusing together releasing massive amounts of energy.

Fission reactions occur when the nucleus of generally unstable isotopes are split into smaller, more stable fission fragments. Typical example is U-238 going to Th-234 + beta decay + energy (4.25MeV). This is typical of the type of reaction used in a nuclear reactor.

Energy released from fusion > energy from fission.
