Consider this statement in preparation for the English (Advanced) Modules Paper - "Telling the Truth".

It is a myth that truth exists. There are so many points at which the 'truth' can be distorted, not the least of which are the assumption of responders. Our own willingness to be manipulated can be used against our search for "truth".

Anyone able to tell me how i should go about answearing this question and the layout I should put it in....? any good quotes..? any help will be most appreciated

Mike is always a good example of a character that allows himself to be manipulated at the expense of the truth, particularly in the episode "smaller fish to fry" when he decided to drop the story about telstra because he is given a phone..... The concept of the media manipulating the truth is covered particlarly well in "The Siege" when Marty crouches to make it look like he is in danger, and they stick a psychology student in front of a bookcase to make him look authentic. "Playing the ego card" also demonstrates the media's manipulation, as Mike tries to tell the guys when to shoot, and has obviously tried to teach them the lines he wants them to use during the interview... "Are there rebels in those hills?" "You said so!"

"we Aint got dames" provides evidence for the concept that the audience can influence what "truth" is presented, as it demonstrates the way that what we see is influenced by the ratings, which are influenced by what we choose to watch.

Brooke's comment "A sports star dropped for poor form, now there's an interesting story" satirises the way that the media takes the simple truth and sensationalises it, making it into something they think the audience will want to see.

Another conept you could refer to is the idea that whatever the image or version of the 'truth" that is presented, the audience will form their own opinin, and choose what they want to believe.

hope that helps.

frontline shows us how truth is distorted through satirical methods
it shows us the process of investigative journalism and how it is false because of unethical media practices
