I've got a mini-assignment to do for homework and this one question is giving me a lot of trouble. If anyone can help me out with this, I will have their children.

1) HCl solution can be prepared by appropriate dilution of concentrated 10M solution. Explain why it is still necessary to standardise the 0.1M HCl solution derived by the dilution of concentrated HCl.

Thankyou.

Volumes of high concentration HCl absorb water from the air. It is therefore uncertain what the actual concentration of the stock bottle is.

Also the concentration of HCl is not accurately known when it is manufactured. This is becuse a number of factors such as temperature and pressure. This is why the solutions have to be titrated to get an accurate concentration of the solution.
