How does HECS work? And is there an initial cost that you have to pay?

all i know is it depends on your intial mark at the end

e.g. u wanted to do computer science in sydney UNI

and the standard mark say was 80
but if you wanted to run on hecs you would probably have to get 87

that's it

Gubble has the right idea.

The government pays your university academic fees until you start earning $40k or more p/a, at which stage 5% (I think) of your salary is garnished to repay the HECS debt until it's all paid back.

If you pay your fees up front instead of taking the HECS option, you get a 25% discount.

Yup. The government only pays for the academic side. Excluding textbooks, there's about $500 worth of other fees you need to pay at USyd. I assume other universities would be similar.

doesn't everyone has to do HECS except if you apply for the small amount of courses that let you do fee paying ? or can you pay up front for everything.. ?

oh no i get it
you do HECS but you can either pay up front or defer the payment
if you pay up front, is there still more stuff you have to pay later?
