Ok, My prescribed text is "Swallow the Air"
I chose "Oliver Twist" and "Harry Potter: TPS" as my related texts.
I was just looking through the forum and most don't think you should use Harry Potter, but there is only 1 week until exams! What should I do?

I did an assessment using these texts and got about 75%, which I don't think is too bad seeing as it's my worst subject.

We're a bunch of students....if you're getting 75%, which is equating to about a 12/15, which is a high B, then your teachers > bunch of random students.

So I'd go with your teachers. (Though I reckon HP is a bad related as well).

At first I was like OMG WHAT, HARRY POTTER? NO, DON'T DO IT.

But yeah, if you can get 75%, maybe I should be doing HP too :haha:

wtf? youd probably get ripped to pieces in the hsc. the hsc markers are NOT your teachers, they do NOT know who you are. they will get the impression that youre just another one from the thousands of students who just dont give a shit about the hsc.

I disagree. Honestly, I think the HSC markers will immediatley be turned off when they see what ORM you have, but I'm sure if you follow it up with a brilliant essay, you could get a good mark for it. I don't think they'll see it as joke. My teacher continously tells me that one ORM i chose isn't sopisicated enough, but I manage to get good marks anyway, and I'm not changing it.

If the texts demonstrate the notion of belonging then there is no problem?

I choose Priscilla: Queen of the Deset for my related text for Journey's last year. At first the teacher was hesitant, but I managed to use it effectively and could justify its usage. I topped the year in Journey's.

Basically, if you can use it effectively, and you've made your own notes, go for it. If all you've done is copy someone elses, do not do it as a text. You need a fairly original interpretation to stand out with it.

You could probably do it if your techniques and ideas are good. A friend of mine is doing GTA.

btw are you doing Philosopher's Stone?

I'm doing HP and the philosophers stone.
When we do related texts we fill in this related texts sheet with ideas about belonging and quotes relating to belonging that are in the text.
I got more out of that text then i did my set text.
I think its good *shrug*
I'd screw myself over tying to use a more sophisticated text.

If you did a good essay, one of two things will happen

a) Hardly anybody else will do HP and so you'll stand out for taking the risk and doing it well

b) Lots of dumb people did HP and so you'll stand out for being better than they are.

I can't see it hurting you unless you can't pull off the essay, which you presumably can.

nah, don't worry about it- it's too late. Just make it clear that you are a smart student.

Harry Potter... gotta love it.

it's too late to change your related texts, just go with it, you seem to know it well and like others have said it may allow you to stand out.
