It seems like a pretty easy concept, but I'm still a bit confused.

Does your ranking come from your position in your most recent assessment? Or does it come from the average of all your marks in a subject so far in comparison to the average of your peers in that class?

If the 1st option, is staying at rank 1 right before the HSC a chance thing? (given that you work hard enough to achieve the top position)
If the 2nd option, can someone ever become rank 1 if they fail one assessment but do very well with the rest, all the while being in a class with consistently high-achieving students? How would someone be able to achieve rank 1?

Its calculated based on all your assessments you have completed up to that point. Assessments also have different weighting so getting 1st in a 25% assessment will obviously mean a better end rank compared to an assessment worth 10%.

For your question about someone failing and then trying to become 1st. I guess its possible, but in a cohort which is strong highly unlikely that you can go from a fail to a 1st rank in the end but you can probably still improve a lot.

Overall at the end rank 1 is the person with the highest percentage of assessment weighting
