How do you calculate your uai and how much of it does the ast affect? (1 Viewer)

Sorry if this has already been posted or if it's in the wrong section.

I know it's your best 3.6 tertiary units
But what units??? the UAI website has been pretty vague....

People have been going around saying the first term in year 11 doesn't count or is worth 'less' but my brother comes along and says it's worth more.

How badly does the ast affect your final uai?
The teachers at my school say you should treat it like a normal class but is it actually worth 1 class? Then my friend informs me that it's 20% of your UAI.

Things I know about it is...
-If you do really well it can pull your mark up......
but what happens if you get average or below?

Gosh, my school's a tad vague in this area. =.= I'm just preparing for the worst seeing its so English-based. :burn:

the AST scales your cohort amongst the system eg. specialist maths at Narrabundah college ranks ahead of others schools and thus the marks are scaled up by the difference between specialist maths mean at Narrabundah and the system mean. if a class within a school is ranked below the system mean then the marks will scale down by the appropriate factor

the AST does not count as a mark (not 20% or 23% or any %), but it is used to adjust your marks for comparison with the rest of the system, if your cohort lies on the mean it may not change at all. information is vague as there is no clear cut rule for what change the AST will have on your scores, look at the historical means for your school as an indication but this will not tell you everything

also, AST is not only english based, there is more to it than that; you need to analyze feelings etc. and there is some basic maths/science also. don't worry about that if your not too hot at english coz it doesn't ask you to critically analyze the characterization of Hamlet or anything remotely like that. it is an intelligence test and the candidates results show this, people who aren't necessarily good at english still can do very well!

Hmm that's interesting since we were informed that it directly affects our grades
(not just used for scaling schools and then dragging your score up/ down)

I've done practice questions and it's pretty much english with a hint of science and maths (besides, the maths parts are really simple, just reading graphs and tables).
I mean there's the essay which focuses on issues etc which is very much English related. ALso, the short response which include large chunks of texts, quotes, images to analyse. You could probably understand why someone who's forte isn't english will have trouble with it. ^^"

Unless our teachers lied to make us try harder I'm gonna assume it is a % since everyone (literally) is saying it is.
