you can put \ then a space, at the end of the word

oh what about if you want to start a new line in the equation like
y=2x+1
=2(-1)+1
=-1

If you want to write a sentence in normal font, just use the \text{} command, writing what you want to say in the brackets, and it will come out like normal. Just be warned that it will take no mathematical notation however, and that would have to be written outside the brackets.

Alternatively, place surround any non-mathematical text with $ symbols. E.g. $Testing $ s = 1 gives
