Hi all! I'll be at USYD in 2013 and I'm looking forward to joining USU's clubs - my question is how many is a normal amount that people are a part of? I have a list of about 10 that seem right up my alley, is that too many? Also, while we're on the subject of clubs - what are your favorites? Lastly, if anyone has ever done SciSoc's first year camp - how was it? What did it entail? Do the spots for it fill up really quickly or if I rock up there on o-week would I be fine registering? Thanks everyone!

Join as many as you like! :)

I joined quite a few; SciSoc, Science Revue, Choc Soc - just to name a few. As for the first year camp - I never participated so I would not know but I heard it is fun.

So I take it you took a Gap Year? Or did you get an early offer? :S

like passionxmusic said, join as many as you like! Just make sure you get an access card first before joining and you can join any club/society at any time during the year:) there's no limit to how many people there should be in a society, and from personal experience, for some societies I joined I don't even come to their events or commit to them LOL

Those are 3 I plan on joining! And I'm an Aussie citizen but went to high school in the US so I graduated in June of this year, and I'm waiting to start uni in March 2013, and through UAC I was able to get my ATAR equivalent from my American scores and I'm pretty sure I'll be getting an offer from usyd! Can't wait to come back home.

True! At the beginning of the year it seemed like an awesome idea to attend their bake sales, free BBQ/breakfast etc but alas I never ended up going to any! But for those who do go - it is money well spent.

You can join as many as you like. They won't care how many others you have joined. Give it a go, and see which ones you like.

What tends to end up limiting people is their actual involvement in whatever clubs they have joined. So I perhaps joined about 10 in my first year, I was actively involved in the activities of maybe 3-4 (in terms of attending events etc), and the others I just got the emails, used discount cards if they had one etc, but didn't really end up getting involved in them. Down the track I ended up being heavily involved in 1 society (ie. on the committee, helping to run it), and attended events of maybe two others. It all just depends on what interests you, how many events are run, and your other time commitments (eg. class/work/study etc).

All the clubs are very different in terms of how frequently events are run, and what kind of events they offer etc some clubs will by their nature have a level of attendance that is required if you join and want to be a member (eg. if you join a musical society/ensemble you better go to the weekly rehearsals :p) but most clubs don't have those kind of requirements/expectations.
