Hi, I'm a year 11 student doing the following subjects: English Advanced, English Ext 1, Maths Adv, Maths Ext 1, Health and movement science, Italian Continuers, Studies of religion 1, and physics.

In year 12, I'm planning on dropping physics and picking up maths ext 2. Both my English teachers have encouraged me to avoid English extension 2 as it would be too much work and apparently there's a massive gamble in terms of marking.

Therefore, my year 12 subjects would be:
- English Advanced
- English Extension 1
- Health and Movement Science
- Italian Continuers
- Maths Advanced (still have to do it even with ext 2 at my school)
- Maths Extension 1
- Maths Extension 2
- Studies of Religion 1

Is 12 units too much? I was planning on starting with 12 and then dropping to 10 units halfway through year 12. E.g. if ext 2 is good, I could drop Italian or smth, but if ext 2 is bad, I could drop ext 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

i do 12 units and its pretty chill (but probably only because they're pretty content light subjects)
it probably will just come down to how well u can manage your workload (italian seems like it might require a lot of investment), but i think 12 units is pretty cool in case u flop one of the hsc exams

I was in a similar place to you last year actually! I ended up choosing to do ext2 english, and was going to do ext2 math, but decided not to as I felt like the workload would be too much (which I'm very grateful for doing).

It all really depends on your current abilities - for example, I'm doing Japanese Continuers, but I've always been pretty solid at the language grammatically, and so I've been able to devote more time to harder subjects over the year. You have to consider the way you work as well; if you did a MW, would you have the diligence to continuously work on it throughout the year, or would you end up procrastinating until the end? For ext2 english, the way you do well is through research (like tons and tons of research) and experimentation with form - it's actually not too much of a gamble if you have a natural ability in english and are consistent with your time management.

I honestly do recommend dropping a couple units where you can, as it frees up periods and allows you to really devote your time to perfecting the subjects that you're already good at. In the end, you should choose what you're best at and what you actually enjoy (I know it sounds cliche lmao, but its true!). At my school last year, the girl who got the top atar was doing various humanity subjects rather than STEM, and achieved a great final score bc she enjoyed and was better at those subjects. I was originally taking modern history and physics at the start of yr11, and switched to jap continuers and art soon after, which I'm so glad I did because I genuinely enjoy the subjects and want to study them. If I had stayed with physics, I likely wouldn't have studied it and, despite the good scaling, wouldn't have received as high marks as I do for art.

It was soo hard to decide what to do with my subjects at the end of year11, and ultimately, it's about how well you know yourself. If you're diligent and have great time management, then do the extra units, and you can always drop them later on. If you enjoy creative work and are good at english, then I highly recommend taking ext2, even if you drop it later on. Unis really like ext2 kids too because it shows you have the commitment and maturity to devote yourself to an extended research task.
