If you're going to pre-prepare a story for the exam, you can't expect to manipulate any story perfectly (unless you get very lucky). Obviously, the better your skill in English / more creative you are, the easier you will find it to manipulate. Otherwise, prepare a few stories OR prepare only one but have a few ideas in your head. I'm stuck in the same dilemma with my half-yearly, and because I am amazingly uncreative I'm going in with a few stories though out already.

This can be quite difficult under the time pressures in exams.

If you can get over your panic and think with clarity, try and explore the question beyond the physical and obvious undertones. Try and think in symbolic/metaphorical ideals as this especially can help to distinguish your story from the masses and get you a better mark.

Another important point is that if your stimulus is an object, DON'T make this object some passing and unimportant aspect of your story.
ie; if the stimulus is a brick, don't write in your story about how your protagonist passed a brick wall on his wall to school, and expect that to be sufficient interaction with the question- you will be penalised, and quite severely.
