How To Quote Historians (1 Viewer)

hi
just wondering is there actually a proper way to quote your sources?
as in i mean
do you say: Accoring to Tacitus, "quote", blah blah
or
do you say: "quote" (Tacitus), blah blah

It totally depends on how you're structuring your sentence.

If you had the quote within the sentence, you'd do it this way:

And as many ancient historians have pointed out, Boudicca was 'hideous' (Tacitus).
Alternatively, you could do:

Many ancient historians pointed out that Boudicca was ugly, Tacitus says she was 'hideous'.

I don't think you always have to do it that way. If you consistenly write 'x says 'y'', you're going to have a very boring essay. :)
