First and last get pinned with the highest and lowest HSC exam marks. These are now their moderated assessment marks. Then everyone in between is moderated based on their school mark. Closer school marks to first, then closer moderated marks to first. It has nothing to do with your rank, unless you are first or last. There are other factors such as the mean of the marks, but it's not a major concern.

But some schools have really hard assessment tasks, and others are just piss easy?

(note: internal = school assessments and their rankings, externals = actual HSC exam marks)

So because you are first, it doesn't matter what your assessment mark is.

It is all moderated by BOS.

Say you get an aligned mark of 90 for english, your internal mark will be the same as your external as you are first.

However your peers (2nd, 3rd etc...) will be put below the 90 for their internal marks depending on how close they are to you internally.

So yeahh if you're coming first it shouldn't affect you in any way.

Yes, so this is where moderation comes in. The moderated assessment marks for your school are bounded by the highest/lowest HSC exam marks. So everyone's marks are adjusted to fit within that range. No moderated assessment mark is higher than the highest HSC exam mark; no moderated assessment mark is lower than the lowest HSC exam mark.

Only if 90 is the highest mark. If the highest HSC exam mark was say 95, then he would receive 95 for the moderated assessment mark and whatever HSC exam mark he achieved.
