HSC maths and Uni maths ... (1 Viewer)

I want to study astronomy at uni which u need a high level of mathematics and physics.

But im not doing maths as a hsc subject, i should have though. I was wondering how hard is the "beginner maths" like for someone who didnt take maths at school.

Because I might have to redo maths next year so i have a proper foundation for uni.

like would it be equal to extension 2 maths in uni, and would i be allright to stat off in beginner mathematics and then progress into some really advnced maths after semester 1 or in second year ?

what uni do you want to go to?

i can only comment on uow (although i doubt you want to go there if its astronomy), which has three levels of maths that essentially cater for general maths students, averageish two unit students and three unit and better level students.

you will probably have to do a bridging course or something, and go into the lowest level maths they will allow you to do (im sure they are flexible)

Goin to ANU, got the best astronomers in the worldand shiznit there.

I know id go into the lowest maths class at first but i saying, if i did that would it be equivilent to like ext 2 maths work from the hsc, and then later on would i be able to get into some advanced classes if i come top in the bottom class kinda thing.

that's your best option. you should be able to do that, unis flexible with that stuff..but obviously you will have to go up to the advanced stuff eventually.

also the physics you learn in uni is quite mathsy. you will need a solid foundation in at least 2unit math but i suppose bridging courses take care of that.

yeah physics and maths are like bruthas haha.

i might do a bridging course, i might just try to study it myself, i did maths in yr 11 but then dropped it for yr 12.

ill learn 2 unit pretty quickly after a few weeks of study, then i might even try to expose myself to some 3/4 unit work depending on if i can grasp it.

thats exactly what i thought, (that u just needed a good foundation of calculus and the basics that 2 unit teaches).

Yes, but you also need to be good at maths. i.e. band 5 in mathematics.

I mean if you're not good enough to pass that, are you sure you're good enough

general maths was never meant to prepare anyone for uni.

and yeah, you need to be pretty cluey when it comes to two unit if you want to go well in maths, because if not you will find the uni work difficult.

do a bridging course. i took math1110 (newc) and it was about equal to 4u maths

that astronomy course you're referring to, is it that crazy phB. program where you need insane credentials + reasonable uai to get in? i got a friend doing astronomy, and hes doing the same maths subjects as me. and im a maths major.

My ex is doing a PhB in Maths/Physics at the moment, I can't see why you couldn't do astronomy.

Then again, getting into a PhB is probably hard without maths, so I doubt this person is doing it. But you never know!
