HSC Topic Completion -- In School -- (1 Viewer)

Hi fellow BoS'ers,

I have a question. In the HSC syllabus right, take any subject, for example maths, there are a certain number of topics for the preliminary course and a set number for the HSC course. The same goes for every other subject, of course.

In our SSSP in Year 10, we were shown Logarithms - a year 10 topic - as prep for Year 11. We all had no idea how to do it. In the preliminary course we didn't finish two topics or three topics. These remaining preliminary topics rolled over into the HSC course.

Is this not a waste of precious HSC time?

In other subjects like Economics, we didn't finish the last topic either, The Government topic. The same goes for pretty much every subject, except for a few.

So my question is, what happens if the school doesn't finish the entire syllabus and topics embedded within the syllabus. Will your HSC be in jeopardy?

As a result, is it best to prepare for every uncompleted topic yourself just in case?

Your school should not be doing preliminary course work during the HSC course. That is wrong and yes, it will put you at a disadvantage as you will either finish the HSC courses late or not at all. If you don't cover all the objectives "students learn to" and "students learn about" for each topic, you will not have covered course material that is tested in the external HSC examinations.

Anyway, your school obviously sucks. (You probably go to crappy Kellyville High School.) Good luck, I hope you fail. Haha. :D

Well I think your teachers would probably set the rest of the course for you for homework when you run out of classes or over the year your hw will increase/ you'll rush a lot of topics.

My teacher who's also deputy principal accidently said something about us being able to sue him if he doesnt teach us everything we need to know, but later covered himself and said he'd give us a whole lot of afterschool days to catch up if he can't teach us everything in time.

Just make sure that you can do every past paper question before you sit the HSC.

You would have to have no life to sue some teacher for not covering the entire HSC course. For goodness sake, it's JUST the HSC! There are alternative entry pathways to universities! There is mature age entry! There are Diplomas from TAFE - practical courses where you learn on the job, e.g. a 3 year Diploma of Remedial Massage Therapy, which includes biology, anatomy and physiology!

Jeez. Some people do have no life. Some people would sue their teachers because they can't be fucked to live life without going to university straight away.
Yeah, I'd rather not waste 3 years of my life doing a course which will only act as a bridge between high school and my real course. Everyone is different. You're welcome to have your own views, but that doesn't give you the right to diss someone who may have a different point of view.

For chemistry, my school didn't finish a subsection or two, so we ended up having trial exams without that content. For the HSC, we ended up having to learn that content ourselves. I'm pretty sure my teacher did her best to complete the entire syllabus but this was really just inevitable. Unlike you though, we actually did start our year 12 work at the start of term 4.

So the answer is, yes. It would probably help you understand better if you did a little reading ahead of the class as well.

Life isn't forever dude. It's nice to know there are alternative pathways you can take, although I'd agree it'd be pretty extreme to sue your teacher for this kind of thing.

lol yeah you can talk alot since you got a good atar and your in uni. You prob wouldn't talk if you didn't make to uni and go to tafe. Sure there are alternative pathways, if everyone has an attitude like you no-one will make uni.

Think of it this way - If you only completed 3 1/2 out of 4 topics for the HSC Economics course when you get to the HSC Exam they can ask questions for the whole course thus it is highly likely there would be questions you haven't studied/learnt the content for.

I heard that the my school's 09 Chemistry class had to skipp like one whole module.

I don't think my school got any Band 5's in Chemistry even though the cut off was heaps low.

Think of it this way - If you only completed 3 1/2 out of 4 topics for the HSC Economics course when you get to the HSC Exam they can ask questions for the whole course thus it is highly likely there would be questions you haven't studied/learnt the content for.
I thought that they only test Year 12 content and maybe a bit of Preliminary skills.

It's not really a wate for Maths as they test prelim stuff in the HSC.

Woah why?
Our Chemistry teacher is some special representative guy who has to keep going on special important meetings and has to keep skipping classes. He also teaches really slowly (covers one dot point in like a week) because some kids in the class aren't smart enough to understand.

Oh well he's better than my old chemistry teacher who we forced to quit.
