Ignore the title, it's irrelevant.


Point of the story is, I'm confused by internal ranks. I understand that the top ranked person gets the top mark anyone scores in the HSC exam, and similarly the bottom ranked person gets landed with the bottom mark (which seems kind of lame), What i don't really understand is what happens to all the people in the middle.
I'm currently ranked about 11 out of 20 something, but if I write say the 5th best exam will my marks get dragged back because of my lower rank?

The mean is worked out from all your exams put together.
That equals the mean of all you assessments put together.
Now your internal mean is the same as the external mean.
Then the work out your distance in marks from the mean and make your internal the same comparable distance.
It's quite simple really.
They probably use standard deviation too, but I cbf.

Also, if everyone gets what's expected but you get higher, your marks will be better off because:
a) your external is higher and hence your HSC average is higher.
b) your internal is higher because the exam/internal mean is higher, hence making your HSC mark even higher again.
