prolly like

3.0-3.5ghz quad core cpu
6gb ram 1600mhz
2x Nvidia GeForce 400
1tb HDD
decent sli motherboard
800w psu
~$200 case
wireless net dohickey
a few decent quality fans

would sacrifice the second GC if that put me over the $3k mark, I cbf to search for actual parts though to get a correct price.

I would spend it on:

CPU: i7 920
SSD: G.Skill Falcon II 64GB SSD
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Ram: OCZ Platinum 6GB
ODD: LG Blu-Ray burner
ODD2: Sony NEC optiarc
PSU: Antec CP850
Case: Antec 1200
Mobo: Gigabyte X58A-UD5
GPU: 5850

Monitor: LG W2753V-PF 27"
KB/Mouse: Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave KB/Mouse Combo
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

or an i7 iMac, those screens are so awesome

well I guess I would need blu-ray as a permanent form of data backup, and also 2 screens 27" because 2 would be epic.
