we used to import extensively from the EU (including UK)- in the 1950s- almost 60 percent of imports.
Now our import markets have diversified..we now import a lot more from the US and Asia (China, Japan etc.).
EU- 23%
USA 20%
ASEAN-15%
JAP- 12%
China- 10% and growing....
In terms of what we import-
24 percent consumer goods (varies with eco. growth)
38 percent intermediate goods (machinery parts, equipment, industrial supplies etc.)
17 percent capital goods-machinery, equipment
21 percent services- travel industry+freight services etc.
these havent really changed much- we still import a lot of technology and manufactured goods which we cant produce efficiently in AUS because of a lack of adequate factor endowments.
hope that helped.....
