How good was the question?!

Or at least it was for my texts. Portrait and A Dolls House.

What did you do for your story?

the essay question was fine and dandy, wrote 23 pages, but i didn't really like the picture, but somehow managed to write 21 pages of some letters between some people... i'm so glad it's over though, i only have 1 exam to study for now, and then beach and relaxation :)

did anyone else note that the lamp in the background and the pen that the guy in the picture was writing with wouldn't be around in the 19th century???

I wrote about Belle Boyd (Le Belle Rebelle) - a spy who seduced her captors and thus was never really caught.

Except it sucked.

Thank god I&S is over!

That's a bad thing? Haha. I set my story in the modern world. It was about a guy who was in love (don't worry - I made it as uncheesy as possible) with an older lady, who was a divorcee and a single mother - but his family and culture didn't approve and he had to break up with her and marry another lady purely for the reason of getting married. At the end of my letter, I wrote that I was leaving her (the other lady - plot twist) to 'be myself again' and maybe even find that lady. It's not as bad as I make it out to seem, haha.

Ew, it was gay. For the essay, it kinda suited my texts that I chose - My Last Duchess, Ibsen, Flatland and Middlemarch - so it was okay. The creative? THAT PICTURE SUCKED. I only noticed AFTER I had written my letter thing that the picture was anachronistic. Damnit.

Haha, damn, then what did you write about? For the first time in an exam, I actually replied to my letter with my real name. I'll give myself a dose of excitement and audaciousness!

It was very unexpected, and I was the only one who thought it was bad, because everyone in my class was like woot! it was good and I shut up because there was no-one else to complain with about the paper.

I wrote three letters, about this girl (Clarissa) whose friend (Diana) is getting married to this old, wrinkly guy....you know, the classic revolting dirty old man, and she's writing to Anne, but Anne is actually her imaginary friend, and I managed to drop in hints here and there that Anne didn't exist. At the end, Clarissa breaks down and doesn't even manage to sign off with 'Clarissa', and I had to write THE END--looked strange without a sign-off but anyway...

And the essay--I wrote some crap that half agreed and half not agreed with the question, but at least I managed to pull it together for the text I did the longest on: related text The Mill on the Floss. I just threaded in my discussion about the stimulus text--didn't bother writing a paragraph on its own.

I liked the paper. I thought the questions were fairly straight forward. The essay was a bit different with having that box of text to refer to but it worked well I think, just keep refering to those views throughout the essay.

So yeah, I'm pleased with how I went.

I did letters too- I did Nora's children. But the picture!! That was unfair for Individual and Society- and bizarre- why would the BOS give a picture that gives the other two modules an advantage? And "a significant moment"- that was weird. I mean, I love the creative section, but it was a weird question. But the essay was ok- for an essay. It sort of fit with my texts- and the question was pretty straightforward.

i thought the essay was awesome... in all my practise essays i had written about autonomy and even had critics relating to it woot woot

as for the picture, wasnt fussed on the idea of that... i wrote a newspaper article about independence in the 19th century. o related to some of my texts, but i was told after that they can mark you down for that, is that true?

I disliked the creative writing question immensely... wasn't fused about the essay question, fit most of my texts well.

I'm just glad that its finally over...

shit shit shit shit SHIT

wonderful essay, but that was mitigated by the shitness of the creative....

i started out with my prepared (suffragette stuff) then realised a few pages in that it would NOT work. as a result i changed it to some guy in exile in france, writing to his friends in england encouraging them to keep fighting for the cause (bit vague here, mentioned crap about the workers, etc, threw in stuff about a Marxist/Socialist revolution and votes for women, equality, blah. he'd been involved in some demonstration that got violent which was why he was in france....

i spent about 35 mins on that question, what with going over on the essay and wasting time doing my first idea.

it's just so upsetting cos i worked pretty hard and now i think i'm looking at about 35-40/50. =(

Yeah the significant moment thing was a bit off putting but for some reason it reminded me of this thing i read about Thackery how he put down his pen and said 'that was a stroke of brilliance!' so i ended up being Thackery and writing about the creation of Vanity Fair and how he incorporated all the stuff happening in the century and getting inspiration from Pride and Prejudice...did every one write letters?? i was so dreading this exam but it turned out to be ok...better than maths at least!!

the essay was okay - went a little overboard with my analysis of browning and didn't spend enough time on the related material...

the creative writing was bad - my story involved rambling with superficial Victorian England ways of thinking and i couldn't even properly involve the picture....

i thought it was overall a good exam.... the picture threw me off initially, but then i decided that i could adapt my generic creative story to the picture by making it so that the guy in the pciture was writing my story

the essay was pretty standard... the questions for this topic are always the same kinda thing, i reckon so i was prepared. Some of my texts such as Pride n Prejudice didnt suit the quote so i made my essay non-biased and supported for and against the quote depending on my texts.....

worst thing about the exam was my aching hand!!! i dont think i could write anything else for at least a week... thank god i dont have anything till drama!
I forgot how painful english exams are.... advanced feels like it was aaaages ago!

anachronism is where the time of a text or thing doesn't correlate with something about it

eg. our module tests 19th century ways of thinking, but the picture given to us didn't seem to be from the 19th century.

Of the test, I thought the essay question was good, but I thought my creative writing bit was crap.
