Just wondering, if you were to come first in a topic in your school for your internals, does it matter what you get for your externals, since aren't you guranteed the highest external mark?

The ATAR is a combination of internal and external marks. So while you will get the top internal mark regardless, you still need to do well (because the mark you get in the exam yourself is counted) to get a good ATAR.

It matters.

You get the highest external mark as your internal but...you also keep your own external mark.

So - highest external mark was 90 - that becomes your internal mark but...

You stuff your own externals and get 40 for the externals then...

90+40=135/2=65 = Final HSC mark becomes 65 and that is the mark that will be used for the ATAR calculation.

Internals are 50%
Externals are 50%

People say that a raw mark of (blah) gets moderated to (blah). For example, a 54/84 in ext maths gets moderated? or scaled? to a 90. So is the 90 used for Atar or the average of external and internal (this is what you said) ?
