Hey guys, I have a bit of a confusion regarding internal marks.

For example, let’s say u are ranked 10th in the cohort and the 10th highest hsc mark is 80. Whilst the highest mark is 90 and lowest is 60. Will u get the 80 as your internal mark or would it be adjusted based on the highest and lowest marks.

Additionally if 1 person does extremely well does that help the whole cohort?

thanks

No. It gets scaled according to the distribution of marks internally. So it matters whether the marks are clustered together or spread apart, and your final scaled internal marks will reflect that.

And yes, if anyone does well, not just one person, the whole cohort will benefit. This is because the average mark is taken into account when scaling. Conversely, if someone underperforms, this will bring down the average and disadvantage the cohort.

ok so like let’s say highest external mark was 90 and second highest mark was 70. Given you are ranked second, is what are u saying that the person ranked second internally will not get the mark of 70 but slightly adjusted? Also can you please explain the effect of the distribution of the marks like high standard deviation and low standard deviation

1st and last person don't do anything to cohort at all. but if the 1st person underperforms (gets lower in the hsc exam than you), u will take an assessment mark lower than ur exam mark

there are also outlier cases where if the 2nd (internally ranked) person gets an 85 exam mark but 1st person gets a 65 exam mark, the 2nd person will get an assessment mark of exactly 85 instead of 65. This only applies if ur much better than the cohort, hence a low competition cohort is much better than a selective school cohort
