Hi guys,

I need some help understanding what is expected of the beginner vs continuers course for Korean. If anyone takes a different language course for one of these levels, any input would be appreciated as well :)

For context, I tried to apply for the Beginners course but was denied as I have one Korean speaking parent at home. I myself am not fluent in the language and cannot hold full length conversations, I can only speak and understand some basic words and phrases. I also read with difficulty and I can't write with grammar or spelling. I have had no formal education at or outside of school.

I have the option to appeal but I feel like I will be rejected again as I have some level of exposure, not none at all.

This leaves me with the choice to take the Continuers course, which is provided outside of school online or in person (14 units total, I have to keep my other subjects and then drop 1 if I decide I like the course). But as I have no solid foundation of the basics + no formal education (writing, reading, speaking, pronunciation, honorifics), would that be a risky decision?

What is the expected knowledge of a student who is entering the Continuers course in year 11? What would they start from?

Would it be better to appeal, try for continuers or just not do the language?

i do continuers but for japanese, and at least for me in yr 11 i was required to know how to read and write somewhat proficiently in hiragana (so i assume it will be the same for hangul)
i also had to know very basic phrases and verbs like eating, reading, etc. and other common words (stuff to do with school and family) and also how to change between past tense, present tense, present continuous tense and stuff.
i think if you have a grasp of that you should be fine, and even if you don't know everything you should be able to catch up because a lot of the stuff i was taught initially in yr 11 was just the exact same stuff from the beginners course.
also, i was only able to hold conversations after the yr 11 course so dont worry about not being able to do that.
i hope your appeal goes through 😁

Every school has to follow these rules for HSC language courses (no exceptions).

Thank you for letting me know!

I know some basic words but I don’t know how to structure sentences correctly with grammar and past/present tense like that. So I’m not proficient in that area

How would a case like mine be treated then? (Not proficient, casual home exposure, no formal schooling)
I guess this is something that you should follow up on, as you stated that you appealed. I would think that you would have reasonable grounds for appeal in this case. If your appeal gets rejected, maybe call NESA and if NESA says you are eligible for beginners, compare notes with your teacher.
