Laptop Help! (1 Viewer)

I thought that with Uni coming up and all that I should buy myself a laptop just to do some typing of essays and that sort of thing. Problem is that I'm hopeless at anything to do with gadgets, so I'm hoping some dashing nerds or nerdettes can recommend me some types of laptops which would be appropriate for my purpose. I wouldn't want to spend anything more than 1500 on it, but I especially wanted one that was lightweight and easy to carry around, and which had a particularly fantastic battery which could last a while. Thanks in advance.

If u want branded laptops i suggest: LG (usually sleek and light), Toshiba, Sony

ALSO DONT BUY FROM 'MSY' (I DONT LIKE THEM THEY SO UNRELIABLE, even they provide REALLLY REALLLY CHEAP COMP PRICES)

dell have cheap laptops. on their web site you can choose/customize the specs of the laptop. if you'd rather buy retail i've found JB Hi-Fi are the best with price. places like Harvey Norman and Domayne generally mark up their prices ALOT so stay clear unless there is a massive sale.

o yeah, make sure you dont accidently buy a really good graphics card with your laptop if you dont plan on heavy gaming or HD movies, cause they can bump up the price considerably

But seriously, lightweight, great operating system, thin, fantastic quality product, education discount.
Sure you may not be used to it. I used to use a PC. I now have an iMac and use OS X. I'm a switcher

If you're after something fairly light and portable then go with the Macbook. If the 13" screen doesn't please you go for the 15" Macbook pro. You'll be forking out around 2600'ish with your student discount on the Pro, and significantly lower for the standard Macbook's. If you really don't want to spend that much, go for a cheaper Acer or Toshiba. You will however be stuck with the archaic windows software, and will be carrying around a brick in your bag. Another lighter option would be one of the HP Pavilion's, but I wouldn't waste my time with their hardware problems either. Yeah, go with the Mac. You won't regret it.

I disagree.

Get a pc. I cbf arguing about the pros and cons of mac vs pc but there is a thread on it. I feel the pc is superior.
imo macs are great for porn and art, thats it.

yeah i mean most people use pc's - and well you get more software on pcs. There can also be conversion issues between os' - which i have faced. Most University networks are configured to suit pcs, and can have many problems when trying to network in macs. Many drivers, hardware and software don't come out on macs.

Running XP/Vista on a mac is like going to a gay bar on a "leather" night to pick up straight chicks - its just silly. You might aswell be going to a straight club.

Mac is very shiny/clean etc, but it doesnt have all the functions like a pc does. It doesnt give you much functionality (other than "shiny" display functions). Do you think its a coincedence that most (if not all) pc labs in computer studies departments are pc based? I look at the CSIT building at ANU, they have over 300 computers, and they are all pc/ubuntu. Even when you go to the library 2/3rds to 3/4's will be pc, and mac will have the rest.
