Hello! This is my first post on here so I'm not totally sure what I'm doing hahaha. I thought it might be a nice idea to have a thread (if anyone replies to this) about Latin for next year's graduating class. I am trying to form a study group in person too but that has not materialised as of yet!

So yes... I am doing Latin Continuers and Extension (I was ranked first in Preliminary Latin). My class is three people for Continuers and I am the only one for Extension sadly, but my teacher is really great and this is by far my favourite subject so I'm not too worried. I am really confident in my memorisation and commentary skills for next year, it's only the unseens that are kicking my butt! I'm doing one every day though to try and improve and I am trusting the process with hard work.

If anyone wants to help each other out or just leave stuff here I hope this is useful! Please reply to this!

hi, yes!! i think having a latin thread is a good idea. in my school, there's 10 in continuers and 8 in extension, even which i think is not a lot, but still decent compared to your 1 person extension class... i'm definitely down to join your study group if you end up making one :) what kind of structure/plan are you thinking of?

heyy im geniunely curious, what made you decide to take latin for hsc? there is virtually no purpose for it since it is mostly a dead language... was it out of personal interest, as an atar booster, or another reason? again im really just trying to understand, not trying to be mean in any way

No worries, I understand!! I get asked this question a lot by my family too :')

I took Latin because I like it. It's like a key into a huge world of ancient texts, and I think that's really cool!! So much is lost in translation, and I feel like you can only really appreciate the richness of the poetry and speeches, which we study, in their original language. It's really rigorous and challenging, but it's also so rewarding once you decode all the layers of grammar and confusing syntax. I also think it's insane that I'm able to read the exact, unchanged words left behind by people who lived 2000 years ago. So ultimately, it was personal interest that motivated me - Latin is such a rich subject that combines the best parts of languages, ancient history, and English.

I also think that we shouldn't base our subjects too much on their purpose because nearly everything we study in school will never be used again. I'll probably never touch any maths beyond Y7 level or write essays about novels after I graduate, unless I go into a very specific career. But people argue that it's not just the content that matters, but the skill e.g. English teaches you how to express yourself and defend a contention. I think the same applies to Latin, in that it teaches you to critically approach texts and construct arguments.

Ofc there are also smaller bonuses that help. The scaling is very good ;) (Latin Ext's scaling is on the same level as 4u maths). The teachers are usually good. Your Latin class is pretty close because there aren't a lot of students who take it. It's a very hard subject, and the people who take it for Y12 are typically really smart and driven as well.

Out of curiosity, what subjects do (did) you do?

dang that is actually so cool! i guess i thought that people mostly take it for the scaling (which honestly is never a bad reason lol) but it's so cool to know that you are personally interested in it!
i do (did) english adv, maths adv, maths ext 1, bio, chem, ancient, and history extension. i'm assumning you also take ancient given your personal interest into the past?

I did ancient in y11, but had to drop it for french and latin ext :( i'm still interested in it outside of school tho!!
So now I'm doing 3u eng, 3u maths, french cont+ext, and latin cont+ext. But 12 units seems too much considering 2 of them won't count. Did you think it was worth it, since you've finished all your exams now?

ohhh that's a lot of languages, wow! i do think it was worth it to take 12 units since it is very reassuring to have a buffer. obviously the workload is extra, but you won't be hyper stressed over performing extremely well in all subjects since you have 2 extra units. for me, i definitely slacked off on 3u maths, but it was alg because of my extra units haha
