a common application is in spreadsheets.

lets say that you are a teacher and have a spreadsheet that contains all the assessment task results for a class of students.

one of the things that you may regularly do is sort the student marks from highest to lowest to see who came where.

to do this you need to select the appropriate cells, go to the data menu and select sort.....and so on.

one of the options available to you is to record all of these steps as a macro.

once you have recorded the steps you can then draw a button in the spreadsheet (use the draw rectangle tool). right click on the button(rectangle) and assign the macro to the button.

then any time you want to sort the students according to their marks you only have to click on that button instead of performing all of those manual steps.

it is a big time saver.

if you have microsoft excel there is a tutorial that shows you how to record macros, this will help you understand.

you can also record macros in word and access.
