Okay so I have a some what idea of what I want to do..
although it is still rather vague.
I really love maths.
And I was considering doing a BA in it..
but I am really unsure as to where that will lead me to..
I am really not that big on statistics.. I rather core mathematics.
I am aware that RMIT has a BA Applied Science (Mathematics)...[btw, is the enterance for this low because it is shit or what?]
I am just point blank on all this.
I need some insight into doing a BA in maths...

blargh. i don't know any other way to figure out if it is what i want to do other then doing math formulas.. blargh.. annoying people.
studying can be living life aswell. -.-
she wanted me to go get a job that has maths in it.. like using a bit of statistics.. rara.. yes operating a cash machine at coles will give me a really good idea if i want to do maths at university.
i reckon the only way i am going to know is if i give it a try.. jeepers.

hrm. i can't work with computers.. because i get addicted and depressed .. i can just have this picture of me in the future with a beer belly and no social life.

and seriously the only cable i will be laying is in the toilet (okay tooo much detail).
i cannot see me climbing up ladders and shit.

and i would not want to work with statistics.

i love core mathematics.

wtf can i do for a job. blargh.

maths is definately the love though.

yeah but i dont reckon a maths degree can go to waste.. it can team up with pretty much anything i reckon!

sen turksun? hayir.

No.. it is not that I can't do Computer Science... I just didn't like who I became when I was studying it.

But yes I hear you out... I can imagine that maths is really difficult at university and i may have to consider doing some of the work part time in order to be successful at it!

If you need to go part time you shouldn't be doing maths in the first place. "Core" maths doesn't lead to any particularly spectacular career options (from what I've seen). Also I wouldn't knock statistics, it's worth checking out.

Can't I just study maths because I love it?

I might need to study part time because I need to work clean cook etc..
I live independant.
If I sort shit out I might be able to go full time.

And I am not running away from a maths problem because it is toooo hard..
it goes against what I have learnt from doing maths.

But seriously, I DO appreciate what you are saying.. and I agree, I could be a bit quick in knocking statistics. Life without 'core' mathematics.. I wouldn't want to imagine it!

lol bende turkum, justing making sure.

Did you do any math subjects with Comp sci? cause if u did and passed em they r credit points. If you didnt want the soo nerdy side of computing you shouldve chose Information Technology, as it contains soome business computing too

yeah it was pretty much a repeat of year 12 maths.

oh and yeah, i wouldn't test me on my turkish lol..
i'm just stubborn.. i have this language sorta learning disorder..
and they say it would be difficult for me to learn a language..
i thought i could prove them wrong haha..

thankyou for the contributions everybody.. very insightful!

what the comp sci maths was a repeat of yr12? i did 1st year math n i gotta say it was way more advance then yr12 maths. For comp sci especially u have to do discreet maths which i here is really hard

i dunno.. i left like the BA in less then a week (at deakin)...lol my siggy is a bit wrong... and did a bit of a diploma.. (it was a cheaper way in.. and it could knock a year off the BA).

i had a lot of personal shit happening.. people dying, homelessness etc etc (i'll shut up tooo heavy lol).. so i didn't get a real fair go on my VCE..
so i am gonna give it another shot next year...
and do the hardest maths that we have 'Specialist Maths' to get a better idea.

But I have a bit of time to decide if mathematics at university is for me.
I just thought part time was an option.
But what ever I decide to do at university (that is if i choose to go).. i am not giving up my maths!

If you want to study maths as much as you say then go for it. Do a double major in maths or maybe an honours stream program. Although pure maths students (at least the ones who have motivation) seem to be locked up in their rooms for alot of their time.

Don't be put off by some of the comments in this thread - if you really love mathematics, and you have some talent for the subject, then that's what you should study. I don't know why you would want to do a BA in it though (unless there are some other arts subjects you are interested in studying as well). Usually maths is studied as a major in a science degree. Some unis also offer a bachelor of mathematics.

Mathematics is such a broad field that if you study it to a reasonable level at uni you are bound to find something that interests you. It may not be an area that you had even thought of when you started.

As for the workload, I am a mature age student with two kids. I managed to do a Bsc/BEd in mathematics full time and maintain a HD average. I almost finished in the minimum time (with the exception of one subject that I had to do in semester 1 this year.) You do have to work consistently though - it is not something that can be successfully crammed the night before.

Thankyou Iruka!
Your post is refreshing and to a degree inspirational.
Hrmm.. I can only find one university here in Victoria (rmit) that teaches straight Mathematics.. wheras the other universities tend to like mixing it with teaching.
Do you feel that I would benefit more in doing mathematics as a major in a science degree?
Then the next question that comes is what sorta science?
