So Im confused how to get from this line: 346095 x (1.005^(n)) - 587400 x (1.005^(n)) + 587400 = 0
to this line: (1.005^(n)) = 587400/241305
its from 2009 Mathematics HSC question 8 b iii
thanks :)

Make it 587400 x (1.005^(n))-346095 x (1.005^(n)) = 587400
Then factorise out the 1.005^n, and divide both sides of the equation

I had the occasion this week to drill 2 of my students (1 in Yr 10 and 1 in Yr 11) in precisely the area you are having trouble with. You should revisit your Yr 9 algebra. From my experience, many students who have difficulties in Yr 11 and Yr 12 Maths simply because they have not fully grasped & mastered their Yr 8, Yr 9 and Yr 10 algebra.
