Idk what tutoring to go to, i plan to do 3u maths. I did dr du last year in year 9 and did a private tutor in term 1. the resources my private tutor gave weren't good and he didn't give me enough hw. I didn't go to dr du in term 1 since I thought 1-1 might be better. I also live near a matrix which I have heard positive feedback from. I live quite far from dr du as well and was doing online but up until year 10 term 3 they don't offer online since they start year 11 content. Which offers better resources? And how is the in-person teaching style at in each centre?

TL;DR Which should I go to and keep going until end of hsc for maths tutoring, I'm in year 10. (Dr Du or Matrix Education)

Why would you need/want additional resources and extra homework?
Most schools use a maths textbook. If yours doesn’t, then the Cambridge series is quite good. The exercises in the textbooks should provide more than sufficient practice in applying skills in each topic. If you feel you’re struggling, get a tutor who can help you work through your textbook(s).

Can you share with me what kinds of Cambridge or Math books should I buy if I do not go for tutoring, just practice at home by myself. Thanks

Since you are not the OP (who stated their intention to do 3U/extension maths), selecting a suitable textbook would depend on which year you are in and/or what level of HSC maths you are aiming to do. In Stage 5, there are different textbooks depending on whether students intend to do standard, advanced and/or extension maths. I will hazard a guess that since you are taking your own initiative, you might be aiming to do Extn maths, in which case, this might be suitable: https://www.fivesenseseducation.com...0-core-adv-ext-3e-print-digital-9781009409643

For full & open disclosure, I haven’t actually gone through the current new editions of any of the maths textbooks. Over a decade ago, I helped my eldest and my friend’s kids through high school maths and there were shocking numbers of errors in many of the textbook series, whereas we only encountered a couple of errors in the Cambridge edition of that time (before the current NSW syllabus came into effect).

My son was radically accelerated using Maths Pathways and Maths Online which is another way you could work through the curriculum on your own (they have in-built tutorial videos), but whereas our subscription though the school was only $12/yr, a private subscription is much more expensive (both companies offer free trials, so you could have a try to see if either suits you).

Speaking from my own experience, DON’T hire a private tutor for maths. Tutors can be great for English but they never worked for me for maths.

I tried so many with rates ranging from $50 to $700 per hour (don’t judge, parents’ orders). Turned out practising questions >> any tutor.

now I didn’t go to any centre like Dr Du but speculate these centres would work well because they’ve got hard homework questions (consistent practice is key)

if you have to pick between Du and Matrix I would highly recommend Du. All the smartest maths people from my school went to Du’s centre. I went to a top 10 school in the state

Yeah priv tutors are only good if you're struggling with maths and/or like to work at your own pace. Du >>> Matrix

Wow! That’s not a typo?? No judgement, but I can’t imagine anyone charging or paying $700/hr, particularly if you didn’t find them helpful.

Working through questions by yourself is a great exercise, but if the class teacher isn’t supporting the students in acceleration, then it might be helpful to have an external tutor for the occasions that the student gets stuck. I kept up my maths skills for decades after my HSC (by helping various family and older friends’ kids) in order to help my kids, but I served that role only for my eldest daughter, as my son was supported by the maths HoD for acceleration and he, in turn, supported my youngest.

I responded to the original post as I was surprised that OP wanted more homework, whereas, I think a textbook like Cambridge has more than enough questions and it would be better to have a tutor that helped the student work through a standard workload instead of giving the student extra workload.
