Mike does lots of media units

Myself and a few others do cultural studies :)

cultural studies isn't too bad if you're "right" for it. Many people find that they are good at either sociology or cultural studies... two subjects that sound and feel so similar, but not :/ (and this tends to only be reflected in the marks)

Dazed is doing MaCS I think, but its a general sort of degree specialising more on media/cultural/sociology/philosophy units (all belonging to the SCMP Department).

My sister is thinking of combining the two. Bad idea?

And generally, whats easier/more fun, media or cultural units?

yeah im doing it. Its a good degree if you dont like the idea of specialising in any media in particular (ie i suck at writing, am too intimidated by screen production and would love to do multimedia but think i would suck at it). It works for me as if i was to do a BA i would end up doing all units in mas or cul anyway.

I really enjoy cultural studies, apparently however that is really weird and wrong because most people hate it. You have to be able to deal with hearing shit over and over and things not making much sense but realising you will talk about them anyway. Cultural studies is heaps cool if you are interested in that stuff. Plus you have to be pretty open minded (well not necessarily in first year but in 200 and 300 Level) I think the best way to sumarise cultural studies is that you either love it or hate it. So if you do this make sure you will like the cul aspect of it because they are 1/2 your degree and you will find it hard to do well in cul if you cant stand it.

Personally I enjoy and am better at the cultural studies units but media is pretty cool too. This course lets you structure your own degree with only a few core subjects in first year which is also cool because you can get a good feel for a variety of different aspects of the media course side. Also because you dont have to specialise you can just stick to the theoretical units if you so wish. I find media harder because you cant bullshit as much. You kind of have to actually get it.

I dont know what you want to know so just ask questions and i will try to answer otherwise i dont know what to say.

B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies

The B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies degree program prescribes an interdisciplinary major combining a wide choice of options in Cultural Studies, with selected production and theory units in Media Studies.

The following units are compulsory so must be included in your degree program:

* CUL100 Text, Image, Culture
* MAS104 Australian Media
* MAS105 Media Cultures

You can then enrol in up to another 18 credit points at 100 level from any area or department. CUL101 Introduction to Visual Culture is recommended, but not compulsory. (See below for degree transfer requirements).

In order to work out the rest of your program,

* decide what combination of units you want to complete at 300 Level.
* then, working backwards, determine what the prerequisites for your chosen 300 level units are, and include them in your program of study.

For example you decide you want to complete CUL303 & CUL310 and MAS302 & MAS304 (this meets the CUL01 Study Program as described in the Handbook). The prerequisites for these units are (as per 2005 Handbook):
o CUL303 – 18cp including CUL 203
o CUL310 – 18cp including 8cp in 200 level CUL
o MAS302 – 6cp at 200 level MAS units including MAS205(P)
o MAS304 – 6cp at 200 level MAS units including MAS205(P)

This means your program of study must include:
o CUL203 (which meets part of CUL 303 prerequisite), another 200 level CUL unit (which together with CUL203 meets part of the CUL310 prerequisite),
o MAS205 (which meets part of MAS302 and MAS304 prerequisite)
o another 200 level MAS unit (which together with MAS 205 meets 6cp at 200 level MAS unit prerequisite)

These are in effect, your ‘core’ units.

You can make up the rest of your credit points by choosing other 200 level CUL or MAS units, or units from other areas or departments. These form your ‘elective’ units.
* Ensure that your program meets number of credit points required for the degree – 68 cp in total, 38 cp at 200 level or above (this includes 300 level), and 18 cp at 300 level.
