Oh, your worried about the verb. Well, so am I.

Explain:
Relate cause and effect; make the relationships between things evident; provide why and/or how

go with the why and/or how bit.

Because the ions have equal charge which spaces them equally in a 3D lattice.

It's agramatically incorrect anyway (unless that's you coping wrong ... )
