Metalheads not meatheads but scholars

INTELLIGENT teenagers often listen to heavy metal music to cope with the pressures of being talented, according to research.

The results of a study of more than 1000 of the brightest 5 per cent of young people will come as a relief to parents whose offspring revere AC/DC, Iron Maiden and their musical descendants.

Researchers found that, far from being a sign of delinquency and poor academic ability, many adolescent "metalheads" are extremely bright and often use the music to help them deal with the stresses and strains of being gifted social outsiders.

Stuart Cadwallader, a psychologist at the University of Warwick in Coventry, was due to present the findings at the British Psychological Society conference in York today.

"There is literature that links heavy metal to poor academic performance and delinquency, but we found a group that contradicts that," he said. "We are looking at a group with lower than average self-esteem that does not feel quite as well adjusted. They feel more stressed and turn to heavy metal as a way of relieving that stress."

Researchers surveyed 1057 members of the university's National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth - a body whose 120,000 student members are in the top 5 per cent academically in the 11-19 age range. Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five. An online discussion was also held with 19 academy members, 17 of whom were heavy metal fans. They spoke of listening to the music to "work off" frustration and anger.

It's also been shown (can't remember the source) that metal's, in a physical wave sense, the most complex genre besides classical.

I always considered that you can judge a person by their music taste.

I think it would also be interesting to know what the difference between you (metalhead) and me (classical buff) might be.

Yay! :D Does it still count if you don't have less than average self-esteem and your note stressed? I sure hope so.

I'd say those who listen to classical music would probably be smarter than metal but only because for some people they reach a point of loving themselves so much they feel a need to connect with the geniuses of the past who 'understand' them.

I listen to metal so I support this research.

I always considered that you can judge a person by their music taste.
hmmmmmm maybe, but couldn't this also be from how they explain their choice of music taste? I don't think merely hearing 'metal' or whatever is going to give too much information, but if they explain it further I think it provides a bit of an insight into their private psyche.

Are you referring to personality or intelligence? I wouldn't say so, for either of them. It's more a question of preference.

I'm currently reading through a book by Lester Bangs called "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung", which is a collection of reviews that he did on music from the 60s-80s. Really clever stuff, and he did reviews mostly on rock and roll.

Depends. If I met someone who immensely enjoyed 50 cent, I'm pretty sure my slight judgement over them is pretty accurate. I could also probably conclude that we have very little in common.

I'm not saying it can illustrate your total personality/intelligence. It can somewhat be a guide, in a general sense. Like if your ipod has only one type of genre, you're probably not that open minded.

You find a girl who likes rihanna and christina aguilera and they're somehow every other girl that likes rihanna and christina aguilera.

But hey. Such perceptions of mine are never set in stone. I suppose too many variables anyway.

Fair call. Though I wouldn't say it's a good thing, to "outline someones personality" purely based on the music they prefer, however I admit to doing it every now and then if I'm really provoked. Don't think I've really met anyone in the flesh that has a similar taste in music to me. A lot of the best friends I have listen to stuff like Dragonforce, The Fray, all manner of stuff that I've no interest in. It is, after all, just music.

One thing that does bother me with teenagers a lot these days is how coveted their music can be to them, they'll dismiss anyone who listens to a different type, and talk about music all day like they'd have a fucking clue.

Maybe the intellectuals, who essentially have little to no friends picked Heavy Metal to make it seem like they were Hardcore, therefore increasing their chances of finding cool friends and "Fitting in".
Interesting.... :burn:

So does that mean people who listen to dance music are the least intelligent because the music is very repetitive?

Hmmm... this is quite an interesting topic to think about.
Dance music... I don't "listen" to it per se, but at dances/discos, etc., I really enjoy that kind of music... There's something about it that helps me to relax and have fun, and destress.
I go to a selective school, and I find that so many of the students at the very top are talented musically. Some in the form of classical piano, others are in rock bands... I'm not sure that the type of music you listen to can define your intelligence, but maybe it does say something about your personality.
I'd like to be able to say that really connecting and having a talent for music is an indication of intelligence, but it seems that to all teenagers these days "music is my life".

Just a comparison between real metal and fake metal...

Iron Maiden (Real metal):

Hear the rime of the Ancient Mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerises one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares
of the Sea

And the music plays on, as the bride passes by
Caught by his spell and
the Mariner tells his tale.

Driven south to the land of the snow and ice
To a place where nobody's been
Through the snow fog flies on the albatross
Hailed in God's name,
hoping good luck it brings.

And the ship sails on, back to the North
Through the fog and ice and
the albatross follows on

The mariner kills the bird of good omen
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime.

Sailing on and on and North across the sea
Sailing on and on and North 'till all is calm

The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the Mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung.

And the curse goes on and on at sea
And the curse goes on and on for them and me.

"Day after day, day after day,
we stuck nor breath nor motion
As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and
all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink."

[SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE (1798-1834)]

There, calls the mariner
there comes a ship over the line
But how can she sail with no wind
in her sails and no tide.

See... onward she comes
Onwards she nears, out of the sun
See... she has no crew
She has no life, wait but there's two

Death and she Life in Death,
they throw their dice for the crew
She wins the Mariner and he belongs to her now.
Then ... crew one by one
They drop down dead, two hundred men
She... She, Life in Death.
She lets him live, her chosen one.

[NARRATIVE]
"One after one by the star dogged moon,
too quick for groan or sigh
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang
and cursed me with his eye
Four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan),
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
they dropped down one by one."

[SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE (1798-1834)]

The curse it lives on in their eyes
The Mariner he wished he'd die
Along with the sea creatures
But they lived on, so did he.

And by the light of moon
He prays for their beauty not doom
With heart he blesses them
God's creatures all of them too.

Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the Sea
Then down in falls comes the rain.

Hear the groans od the long dead seamen
See them stir and they start to rise
Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them speak
and they're lifeless in their eyes

And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on.

Now the curse is finally lifted
And the Mariner sights his home
Spirits go from the long dead bodies
Form their own light and
the Mariner's left alone

And then a boat came sailing towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The Pilot's boat, his son and the hermit
Penance of life will fall onto Him.

And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea
And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins

The Mariner's bound to tell of his story
To tell his tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all things that God made.

And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man
And the tale goes on and on and on.

And Slipknot (Fake metal) (Song chosen at random)

"Three Nil"

Three
NIL!!!

(Yeah!)

Chaos - it's just the beginning
Every promise I made I'm rescinding
Center mass in the middle of the monster
I'm getting tired of drowning the constant

Cry for help
It's debatable
The only reason that you love me is
I'm hated by all

COME ON!
Come see dysfunction
I guess we're gunna leave it
Open for discussion

WHO AM I?
Where am I going?

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong direction
Maybe I'm looking for any direction

This is not my war
This is not my fight
This is something more
This is not my life
This is not my revolution
This is not my convolution
This is not my expectation
This is not my desperation

(Yeah!)

Holed up, scarred, and tamed for the hell of it
Look at me, I am the glorified malcontent
Save me, save this
All I got to do is give up
And all is forgiven
I'm sick

Of being the butt of a cosmic joke
And I don't get the punchline
A million people lined up for miles
To see the great big mouth

SHUT UP AND APOLOGIZE!

This is not my war
This is not my fight
This is something more
This is not my life

This is not my revolution
This is not my convolution
This is not my only reason to question why

TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!
GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here
TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!
GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here
TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!
GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here
TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!
GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here
TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!

(Yeah!)

I'm the pariah (Break Me)
I am the liar (Save Me)
I can take anything (Make Me)
Accuse me of everything (Kill Me)

Cut off the system (Shape Me)
Deny my existance (Waste Me)
I won't be afraid (Try Me)
I won't be unmade (Deny Me!)

COME ON!
Break it off
COME ON!
Buy the lie
COME ON!
Say it
SAY IT!
COME ON!
SAY GOODBYE!

GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here
TODAY I SAID GOODBYE!
GOODBYE!
Oh I didn't need to leave
To stay right here

The report does state that not everyone who listens to Metal is intelligent, just that those who are gifted tend to listen to Metal.
