it's always very busy there, as with going anywhere overseas i would keep is as undercover as possible that you are there alone and are a foreigner.

i don't think it's any more dangerous in the terrorist sense than it has been for the last 2 years

I was there in Xmas 2003, and I didn't feel terriably unsafe. As others have said, it is very expensive to live there, as is a lot of America for Ozzies, but if you don't have to worry about rrent, and are earning an American wage, then you will find it quite reasonable ...

thanks for the info guys...............i've been saving to go to nyc for a couple of years so basically i'm going over there for the break between HSC and uni. It's costing me about $8000 for 3 months rent plus all the extra stuff like food, sightseeing etc.....which is why i've been saving since i was 15 ! anyway, any other info anyone's got about anything is very appreciated,

thanks !

just a question .. why dont you take friends/ a friend with you.
that way you could share the cost of rent, and have someone to go site seeing and stuff with .. just an idea .. \

I went to nyc a couple of yrs back, however I was in yr 9, with my family and was only there for a bit over a week

my personal opinion from what I remember is that its fairly busy but honestly its not much different from sydney, only slightly bigger and with more people. I think you'd have an awesome time, just be smart about it ie travellers insurance, dont overstay your visa cuz it'll fuck things right up if you ever want to go back. the shopping is fantabulous, the main thing that'd piss me off would be not being allowed to drink

Yeah, nobody seems to want to go to Scandinavia and Russia with me for 7 months either.

check out the lonely planet website.. there is a forum there called the thorn tree with threads (or branches) dedicated to a certain part of the world. that way you can talk to people who are there right now or people who are going/ coming back.

Anyone have any idea of the chances of going to NY to study (bachelor degree) ?

ie.. after getting your UAI or maybe as part of uni or something ?
